It's going to be a "rockin" night at Ashby's Venture Jazz Club on Saturday (September 11) when Paul Leegan's top-notch Lonnie Donegan Tribute Band takes to the stage.The distinct sound of skiffle will fill the air at what promises to be a superb evening.
In 1997 Paul appeared at the prestigious cabaret club "Lakeside" performing a Lonnie Donegan tribute and Lonnie, who was in the audience, was so impressed with Paul's performance that he gave him permission to be his tribute performer. Paul became a close friend of Lonnie.
He has taken his tribute show around the country and has even performed to crowds in Tenerife.
The evening in Ashby with start at 8.15 pm, tickets cost £7 and are available from Ashby Tourist Information Centre, based on North Street at the Library, on 01530 411767. Lonnie Donegan is best known as the induvidual who launched the skiffle movement and was a great admirer of country, folk and blues music from the United States.
Successful songs of his included Cumberland Gap, Gambling Man, and My Old Man's A Dustman. Lonnie died in November 2002 after collapsing midway through a tour of the United Kingdom but the "king of skiffle" was known as a performer right to the very end.
