Paul Leegan And The Legends - Skiffle And Country Blues Band

Germany Review

Hello my friend!
It was a marvellous week! I sat down to remind me of all the beautiful memories of the last days!

Sunday 10 August 2003:
At 6 p.m. I got back from my holiday on the Island Sylt. Lutz and Benny went to the airport Düsseldorf to pick you up.
We met at 8 p.m. in a restaurant called "Salinas", where we spent two evenings with Dickie Bishop in April this year.
After that we went to the BMB- Studio and talked a lot about Lonnie and his music. I thought: "They are really nice guys"!

Monday 11 August 2003:
The recording began at 1PM.

1.) Puttin' On The Style
2.) The Battle Of New Orleans
3.) Frankie And Johnny
4.) Rock Island Line (rehearsal)

In the evening we drove you to Cologne! It's one of the greatest cities here in Germany. We showed you the famous "DOM". After that we enjoyed a jazz concert at the oldest jazz club in Germany; the world's known hot spot of Cologne - Papa Joe's Jazzlokal.
Lutz Eikelmann was playing there with some of his friends. Paul and I went on stage to perform a few songs with the band. Paul was fantastic!

Tuesday 12 August 2003:
On Tuesday we recorded two songs:

1.) Rock Island Line
2.) Express Line 56 (written by Warren James); I love that tune!!!!

In the evening we made a barbecue with some of our friends. We picked up the guitars from the studio and performed a lot of old skiffle songs till the sun went down. (All the neighbours had gone now!)

Wednesday 14 August 2003:
It was a hot day. We just made a few overdubs:

1.) Rock Island Line (new piano, hammond organ, electric guitar)
2.) The Battle of New Orleans (percussion, train)

At 7 p.m. we were invited by my uncle to see his collection of old banjos and old skiffle records. It was a great journey back to the better days of music!
After that we went back to our house and drunk and talked till dawn!

Thursday 14 August:
On Thursday we recorded the backing vocals on all tracks. At 4 p.m. we went to a restaurant with nearly the best burgers in town: "Dany's Diner"
In the evening we drove to a jazz session near Dortmund. I remember talking with you about Lonnie and the meaning of death! It was a very spiritual moment for me! Thank you, brother! I will always keep that in mind!

Friday 15 August 2003:
We didn't record on that day! We went to one of the oldest and most beautiful places of Essen: "Werden"
We took two boats and had a wonderful time on our river called "Ruhr".
Later that day we went to Iserlohn! In the evening my group "Twins" had a concert there!
After the concert we went back to Essen and sat until 3 a.m. in one of my favourite clubs called "Antiko".
Again we talked about the tribute record and the future plans.

Saturday 16 August 2003:
Before we drove you to the airport, we went to the biggest rag-fair in our town Essen - Rüttenscheid.
It was so amazing to have you here in Germany! To know people like you makes it easier to see the future optimistic! Thank you for all the energy you put into the music! I'm looking forward to working with you again! Best wishes to Paul!

Love and Mercy!
Basti
